The process of converting sunlight into electricity using thin-film photovoltaics is much faster than other solar panels and can be easily installed on rooftops. These types of solar panels can also be installed in areas with limited space and are more flexible than crystalline silicon models. They are also lighter, which makes them an excellent choice for roofs that may not be strong enough to support the weight of silicon panels.

In addition, the performance of thin-film solar cells degrades less rapidly than crystalline silicon ones when exposed to higher operating temperatures. They can also absorb more sunlight than mono- or polycrystalline silicon panels.

Shah, who is working with Salamat Ali of Government College University in Lahore, Pakistan, plans to use this technology to create affordable solar power systems that will be able to provide off-grid electrification for remote villages. The project is funded by the U.S. Department of State under Phase 4 of the Science and Technology Cooperation Program.
